Engineering and Tech start-up Liger Mobility has unveiled the world’s first self-balancing electric scooters – the Liger X and Liger X+. While self-balancing technology isn’t new to the two-wheeler space developments in the technology have been focused on the motorcycle space with brands having previously showcased prototypes of the same. Liger says that its self-balancing system (AutoBalancing technology) allows riders to ride the scooter and low speeds and even come to a full stop without requiring to place their leg on the ground. Additionally, the system works in conjunction with a reverse gear allowing users to reverse the scooter without needing to use their feet for balance. The scooters will additionally be offered with a learner mode restraining the top speed. All aspects of Liger X and Liger X+’s AutoBalancing technology, including the hardware and software, have been developed in-house, further underlining India’s ambition, determination and quality of engineering talent.” Both Liger X and Liger X+ will be available in five colours and having a top speed of 65 kmph. Both scooters will be offered with liquid-cooled battery packs – removable for the Liger X, fixed for the Liger X+. While battery capacity was not revealed the company says that the X will offer up to 60km of range which gets bumped up to 100 km on the X+. Charging times stand at 3 hours for the Liger X and a little under 4.5 hours for the Liger X+. Electric vehicles have stolen the show at this year's edition of India's flagship motor show Auto Expo 2023. Popular brands Maruti Suzuki and Kia Motors unveiled their concept electric vehicles while Hyundai launched its all-electric model Ioniq 5 and Tata Motors unveiled electric SUV Sierra. However, one of the most unique EVs to be showcased at this year's Auto Expo were electric scooter Liger X and Liger X+ by Liger Mobility, which claims that they are the world's first self-balancing e-scooters. Liger X price According to a report by HT Auto, Liger X will be available for around Rs. 90,000 (ex-showroom) after applying the FAME-II subsidy. For the unaware, FAME or Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric vehicles subsidy was conceived by the government for EV manufacturers to reduce the price gap between fuel-based vehicles and EVs. Earlier the subsidy was capped at 20% of the cost of the vehicle but now it has been revised as FAME-II and is capped at 40% of the cost of the vehicle. It should be noted that the pre-booking for both the models will begin in mid-2023 and the company plans to start delivering the units by mid-2025. Liger X specifications Exact specifications of the electric scooters have not been disclosed but a lot is already known about them. Both Liger X and Liger X+ will have a top speed of 65 kmph, and while Liger X claims to offer 60 kilometers range on a full charge, Liger X+ will give riders a range of 100 kilometers. Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari has held discussions with the finance ministry for offering discounts to incentivize voluntary scrapping of end-of-life vehicles, he said at a gathering of automotive industry stakeholders at the inauguration ceremony of Auto Expo 2023 on Thursday. “The finance minister has talked about the importance of building a circular economy in her economic policy. A scrappage policy is an important aspect of this. Using materials from scrapped vehicles can yield 33% reduction in the raw material cost and 10-12% boost in sales because of the benefit of GST that the government offers. We are trying to get discount from the finance ministry, but I request automotive manufacturers to give some discount for purchases against a scrapped vehicle," he added. India is now the third-largest automotive market in the world, and has the potential to become the biggest within five years, Gadkari said. The day was also marked by the launch of two new SUVs from the Maruti Suzuki stable—Baleno-based coupe Fronx and five-door Jimny which will exclusively be made in India for both the domestic and export markets. In line with the Auto Expo’s focus on alternative fuel technologies, MG Motor India showcased the EUNIQ 7, the world’s first multi-purpose vehicle powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, while net-zero commercial vehicle company Switch Mobility displayed its electric mini-bus, the EiV7, designed to meet applications such as metro feeders, staff, school and campus shuttles. Innovative tech and product showcases dominated the mood at the Expo, with Liger Mobility putting on display the first self-balancing bike and SUN Mobility unveiling new battery swapping technology. “This edition of Auto Expo captures the transition auto industry is going through - the absence of some large OEMs in both startups and legacy space points to the fact that many are still working on products oriented for a more electric future and therefore have decided to keep out in the interim. The next edition of the Expo will see far more of these products come to life," said an industry executive, seeking anonymity.
